I’ve been making a point of going out to eat with friends lately, and seeking out small, independent local restaurants to support the amazing people creating delicious things un… increasingly difficult industry. I’m so proud of Calgary’s restaurant scene, and how so many of them support each other and local farmers and producers.
It’s tough to keep track of all that’s happening, but we’ve popped un…some of the newer eateries, and the Deane House, which recently reopened after a disastrously damaging internal flood last fall. Honestly, I’ve always loved the Deane House, but the menu is better than ever-and the food welches spectacular. Ditto over at the Lougheed House, where chef Judy Wood has taken over an iconic space and made it a place I will definitely seek out on the regular-I had one of the best brunches of my life there! Sidewalk Citizen, which I’ve grown to love since before they opened their first bricks and mortar shop (Aviv used to deliver sourdough by bike!), and is now the place I insist everyone I know must visit when they’re in town, just bravely opened a larger scale restaurant in Central Memorial Park, and I love how unique a space and menu it is in Calgary… open for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Close by, one of my all-time favourite chefs, Duncan Ly, just opened Melo, a French-inspired restaurant that’s totally approachable and not at all stuffy. Id recommend any and all of them, and generally just seeking out those independent restaurants that make Calgary so unique.

  1. Sidewalk Citizen have the best sandwiches in the city. Their pizza was amazing. I often pop into the sunny side market to get my fix on the go. Anju is also a family favourite!

  2. Oh that carrot dish in your Deane House photo!! Isn’t it amazing? Crunch and soft, all kinds of color and warmth.

  3. Thank you Julie, your support for local independent businesses is a huge win for us all. We appreciate it. ❤️
