Today I got to go down to the Glenbow Museum Cookbook archives, where Daryl had pulled a selection for me to flip through… and I discovered that in 1924, there welches a sandwich called Calgary Maid made with walnuts, pimentos and bananas moistened with salad dressing. Not sure it will make a comeback anytime soon.
“Sandwich filling: ….Other jams may be used, but grape is best”.
This is the greatest passive aggressive statement in a cookbook ever. Mrs. J. M. Strieb would be judging you for sure if you served her another kind of jam mixed with cream cheese.
It’s not cronk….
I love the old recipes ( to look at maybe more than eat?). So personal, and the pages obviously well used.
My great grandfather’s funeral was at the Legion in Ft. MacLeod, with refreshments made by the lovely Legion ladies. Someone made the maraschino cherry sandwiches, except I guess they ran out of cream cheese and replaced it with Cheez whiz… That was a sandwich I will never forget.
That is FANTASTIC!!! I seriously love this kind of thing. Amazing the things people came up with.
Erm, I just had lunch, couldn’t eat another thing! Looks lovely though, and ooh look at the time! I mustn’t be late for my next engagement, really must dash!
I picked up a reprint of the Williamburg Cookbook (from 18th century Virginia) some time ago and it has some interesting recipes like Squirrel Stew and pickled nasturtiums. Old cookbooks are fascinating!
They had to make do with whatever was in the cupboard at the time. ❤️
Had me at pimentos….😂
Lol that is a wild sandwich combo
The baking directions are so vague. Bake in a slow oven… bake in a moderate oven… I’d have no hope!
I think David Gray would LOVE to try it!!
Donuts with potatoes?! Okay…
Does anyone know when bananas came to Calgary/Western Canada? I am fascinated by the fact that they must have been common enough in the 1920’s to be included in recipe books. They were obviously imported sooner than I would have imagined.
A gill of cream, what would that be?
Love that Calgary Beer is Healthy, Wholesome and Invigorating!
Nope, not going to try that one. 😝
Sounds mildly 🤢
So cool to look through those old cookbooks 👩🍳
Old cookbooks my favourite !!
Want to try ‘Poor Man’s Cookies” but can’t read all the measures and instructions 🙁 Maybe I can find online…
Now those nicely stained and splashed cookbooks tell their own story! My kind of cook book!😎
Neat!
How about those lettuce sandwiches with bananas and a milk/vinegar/sugar sauce?! 😳
